I agree very strange but it really does boot without a crystal. I am testing it on the bench with a PC power supply and I have used that supply with many other boards with no issues so if it is a power supply issue it is more likely a capacitor on the CPU board. I believe the power requirements are much lower for the MX cards than for their non-MX counterparts so there should be no cold boot issues (though if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me). I've been doing some digging since I posted the question, it looks like the MX is just as prone to the problem :-(.

He touches a point that I have never had an issue with because I don't like Windows restore and I use Acronis True Image. Nevertheless, I read the article and it is quite detailed and well explained as to why Vista restore points are erased if you boot back into XP and then return to Vista.
